NEW: Providence Man Arrested for 1st Degree Sexual Assault at State Park

The Rhode Island State Police announced Wednesday that a Providence man has been arrested for 1st Degree Sexual Assault, Possession of a Firearm by Certain Persons Prohibited, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon When Committing a Crime of Violence, Resisting Arrest, and Obstruction of Justice. 

Jonathan Santos-Perez, age 26, of 54 Glenham Street in Providence was arrested Tuesday after uniformed Troopers and Detectives investigated a sexual assault complaint on July 5 at Lincoln Woods State Park.  

It is alleged that on July 5, Santos-Perez sexually assaulted a female victim at gun point while in a vehicle at the park. Upon further investigation with the victim and witnesses, an arrest warrant was obtained for Mr. Santos-Perez.

The investigation also revealed that Santos-Perez was also wanted by the Johnston Police on an affidavit arrest warrant for a July 1, 2020 incident of  Domestic Felony Assault With a Dangerous Weapon, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon When Committing a Crime of Violence, Carrying a Pistol Without a Permit, Conspiracy to Commit a Felony Assault, Domestic Strangulation, two counts of Domestic Simple Assault, Violation of a No Contact Order, and two counts of Domestic Disorderly Conduct.

Detective Commander Major Timothy G. Sanzi advised that on July 7, 2020 members of the Detective Bureau observed Santos-Perez exiting his residence at 54 Glenham Street in the City of Providence.  Detectives were able to apprehend Santos-Perez on Gordon Avenue after he fled on foot from Detectives approaching him outside of his residence. 

Held Without Bail

Santos-Perez was arraigned at State Police Headquarters by a Justice of the Peace, held without bail and transported to the Adult Correctional Institution. He will be re-arraigned at Third Division District Court on July 8, 2020.

A person found guilty of First Degree Sexual Assault shall be imprisoned for a period not less than ten (10) years and may be imprisoned for life. A person found guilty of Possession of Firearms by Certain Persons Prohibited shall be imprisoned for not less than two (2) nor more than ten (10) years. A person found guilty of Carrying a Dangerous Weapon When Committing a Crime of Violence shall be imprisoned for ten (10) years. 

A person found guilty of Resisting Arrest shall be punished by a fine of not more than five hundred dollars ($500) or by imprisonment for not more than one year. A person found guilty of Obstruction of Justice shall be fined not more than five thousand dollars ($5,000), or imprisoned not more than five (5) years, or both.
