UPDATED: Providence Police Officer McGloin Was Shot -- and Is Safe

A Providence Police officer was shot in his protective vest on Friday afternoon in the area of Douglas Avenue and Admiral Street.

This was part of the Providence Police Task Force activities.

Matthew McGloin, a ten-year veteran was shot and hit in the vest. He was treated for an "impact wound."

According to Providence Police, the officer was taken to the hospital for treatment.

"Blessed that Off McGloin /Smith survived a gun battle today on Douglas Avenue while they were trying to keep our community safe. Their training, preparedness, courage and tactics contributed to their survival. Bless our finest women and men of the PPD," said the Department in a Tweet.

One man is in custody and a weapon has been recovered, according to Providence Police sources. Tyrone Robinson, age 19 was arrested. He is well known to Providence Police and has a record which includes firearms and drugs.

In addition, presently the Department is not searching for any additional individuals.
