Rhode Island College Seeks to Rescind Gordon Fox's Honorary Degree

Rhode Island College has requested that an honorary degree given to former House Speaker Gordon Fox be rescinded by the Board of Education.

"On the day the college learned that Speaker Gordon Fox had admitted wrongdoing, Rhode Island College forwarded a request to the R.I. Board of Education to rescind his honorary degree," said Laura Hart, Director of Communications and Marketing for Rhode Island College, in a statement to GoLocalProv.

Fox was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2010, where he also served as the graduation's commencement speaker. Fox originally graduated from Rhode Island College in 1985.

Other prominant figures who received honorary degrees in 2010 included the Senate President, Teresa Paiva Weed, who also received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, John J. Palumbo, owner, president, and publisher of Rhode Island Monthly, who recieved an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree, and conductor, composer and music educator Frank L. Battisti, who received an honorary Doctor of Music degree.
