With school ready to resume in the coming weeks, WalletHub compared and contrasted the school systems in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia on 12 key metrics, ranging from student-teacher ratios and dropout rates to test scores and bullying incident rates.
The study’s methodology was split into two rankings: a school system quality ranking and an education output and safety ranking.

2014 New England Best and Worst School Systems
Massachusetts
#2 Massachusetts
Massachusetts had the highest reading and math scores in the nation.
The state also tied for the 3rd lowest bullying rate.
Vermont
#3 Vermont
Vermont led the nation in the lowest pupil to teacher ratio
The state also came in second place for most safest school.
Vermont ranked near the bottom, 36th place, for highest bullying incident rates.
New Hampshire

New Hampshire also ranked very high in test scores.
The state placed #2 overall in the nation for both reading (tie) and math.
Connecticut

Although ranked #13 in the nation, Connecticut placed #11 for school system quality.
The state also tied in fourth place with New Jersey for highest reading scores.
Maine
