Tens of Thousands of 38 Studios Documents Being Catalogued for Release

Rhode Island Superior Court staff met Monday morning to discuss how to move forward with cataloging "tens of thousands" of pages of documents, following Judge Michael Silverstein of Rhode Island Superior Court saying Friday that documents from the 38 Studios lawsuit will be unsealed.

"We're doing two things," said Superior Court Clerk Henry Kinch.  "We're cataloguing what's in the boxes -- there are at least 8 boxes, with tens of thousands of documents, which we're doing all by hand.  I expect this to be done in the next several days. "

Kinch noted the next step would be to determine how to make the documents available to the public online, the matter of which he called unprecedented in Rhode Island.

"We're also consulting with our tech people as to what are our options for paperless are -- to make this more convenient for the media and general public," said Kinch.  "We're trying to keep a million pieces of paper off the table, so to speak, so people aren't needing to make paper copies."

Format, Timeframe

"The goal is to be able to see [the documents online] from the outside," said Kinch. "This would be the first time we did this with a case of this magnitude.  The only thing that comes close is abestos and lead paint..but that was years before these technological capabilities became available."

"So once we have the documents catalogued -- and our tech has advised us on our best options, we'll be begin that process," continued Kinch. "I imagine the communications folks will let the media and public know in a release when and where to expect the documents online."

As for time frame, Kinch said he believed the cataloging would be done with the next several days, but could offer no further definitive time frame for the release of the documents, which Judge Silvestein gave ten days last Friday to address.

"This is something we'll do and do right and organized and correct, and once it's done, everyone will get what we have," said Kinch.
