In 2019, Newport’s former "Teacher of the Year" was charged with second-degree sexual assault.

The allegations were that Steven Kalble engaged in unwanted sexual contact with one of his students during the time he was the director of Culinary Arts at Rogers High School Newport Area Career and Technical Center.

Kalble had been recognized for his teaching in 2016;  the victim was a 16-year-old girl at the time of the incident.
