North Providence Police Arrest Individual Wanted for Shooting

On Friday night, North Providence Police say they arrested a city man tied to a shooting.

On June 18, 2021, at approximately 6:40 pm North Providence Police Officers responded to 15 Taft Street and arrested Michael Monteiro, 52, without incident.

The arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Detective Division of a home invasion and shooting that occurred on Thursday, June 17, 2021.  The incident at 21 Winona Street is where the victim James Coccia, 48, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim and suspect are known to each other and police are considering this an isolated incident.  Coccia is currently in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

Colonel Alfredo Ruggiero Jr commended all officers involved in the high risk arrest where they made forced entry into the home on Taft Street, and found Monteiro in the basement where he surrendered to the police.  Providence Police officers and their K9s are assisting in the search of the residence attempting to locate the gun involved.  

Monteiro is being charged with Felony assault/battery, firing in a compact area, simple assault or battery.
