Pothole Armageddon: Here’s Where RIers Want RIDOT to Fix Potholes

This week, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced it would be out fixing potholes.

The announcement came on the heels of January’s blizzard that dumped up to nearly two feet of snow in some parts of the state.

It also came after a report ranking Rhode Island as New England's most expensive state to drive in.

“We’re listening. We have ten crews out today filling potholes, and we will be out again tomorrow, doing our part to improve Rhode Island roadways,” said RI DOT on Facebook.

Consumer Affairs in December ranked Rhode Island as having the worst roads in the country.

“Rhode Island’s infrastructure received a C-minus on its Infrastructure Report Card from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The average driver pays $845 per year in costs due to driving on bad roads. In Providence, one resident seems relatively resigned to the fact that it’s terrible: ‘I’m basically satisfied with the road problem,’” reported Consumer Affairs.

“How disappointing — not even an island; not even good roads,” it continued.

So where do Rhode Islanders tell RI DOT on Facebook to fix potholes? While DOT is responsible for state roads, respondents provided a mix of local and Rhode Island roads they said are particularly problematic.

Rhode Islanders Weigh In

As of Friday, there were hundreds of comments. Here’s a sampling of the respondents.

“Fish Road in Tiverton needs to be repaved badly, it’s a disaster.”

“295N to Johnston RT 6 Eastbound ramp has a pothole that could swallow a tank! Stay alert and to the right.”

“If RI would just follow what CT does, pay more for better asphalt. Theirs has rubber tires in them, we in RI choose cheaper asphalt. I’d rather them more slowly redo roads than last year. The road on Valley from Green End to Aquidneck Ave is the material CT uses and there have been no potholes for more than 30 years!”

“Head on over to 146 north and south and 295 north and south. I hit a couple good ones driving tonight I will be sending my car repair bill to those responsible for the safety and upkeep of the roads. They are awful. My car used to be so quiet now it rattles like crazy in the front end. The minefield I hit tonight knocked my car out of alignment. These roads are a disgrace.”

“On [Rt. 295] every pothole has the painted line from the previous surface in it. The pavement does not stick to the old paint. Why are the old lane stripes not ground off before laying the new surface. They grind them off all the time in work zones to shift lanes, it’s not very difficult to do and it will make the pavement last longer. Just a suggestion.”

“Pave 146 south right [before] the Subaru dealership in North Smithfield The patching has been going on for years it’s a joke I seen 5 cars pulled over with flat tires Friday…it’s a joke how bad will you let that stretch go until someone gets hurt or killed it’s been years fix it.”

“The entrance to the 6/10 connector at Dean St. has about 15 potholes! Inf act both directions of Rt. 6 and Rt 10 need major help. Enough with the 5 day fixes.”
