Elorza Gives Comment - From New Hampshire -- Between Two Men Killed Saturday Morning and Three Shot on Sunday

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza issued the following statement from his vacation in New Hampshire after the first two men were killed, but before three were shot overnight.

“The violence we saw in our City last night [Friday] is beyond inexcusable, While the perpetrators and victims of this violence are likely known to each other, the cycle of gun violence and retaliation must end. We know that our community is already reeling from a global pandemic and now we have experienced even more tragic loss of life due to senseless acts of violence. This is unacceptable. I commend the Providence Police Department for working around the clock to protect our community and bring individuals to justice who are wreaking havoc in Providence. We must all work together– elected officials, public safety officials, faith leaders, business leaders, mentors for our youth, everyone – because we must all be part of the solution.”

Under Elorza, Providence Police staffing has fallen to 403 officers -- the lowest level since the 1970s.

Update on Killing of Two Men Killed Saturday Morning

As GoLocal first reported on Saturday morning, two men were shot and killed early Saturday morning.

Later on Saturday the Providence Board of Licenses met and temporarily closed Fuego Lounge on West Friendship Street the site of the killings.

According to police, the two men were shot around 2 a.m. on Saturday.

The incident occurred outside of Fuego Lounge.

On Saturday morning, police announced the men were 25 and 27, and from Boston.

In August 2020, the Providence Board of Licenses temporarily closed Fuego after a man who had been at the club was later shot by at least two gunmen leaving his club.

This week, the Providence police union issued another blistering rebuke of Elorza’s leadership.

“Has the mayor so quickly forgotten his own words? He tells the governor to ‘face the community,’ but apparently that only applies to him when it’s convenient. When he is on vacation, matters of police concern clearly don’t require his input. If the Mayor believes that the Colonel is fully qualified to handle police matters, then why does he continuously interject himself into situations of which he has no knowledge or experience to fully understand? Why does he continue to jeopardize investigations, just to get the quickest, most attention-grabbing sound bite for his political career on the airwaves?” said the FOP.

Providence has seen a near-endless period of violent crime — multiple shootings, stabbings, and last weekend’s homicide which saw a 24-year-old woman gunned down on the East Side.

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, who has been on vacation this week, held a remote "Zoom" with the press on Friday.

"Mayor Elorza had planned time away with his family to celebrate his wife's recent graduation from Law School. The Mayor continues to be available and is handling City business remotely in New Hampshire," said Elorza spokesman Ben Smith.
