You have an impressive background and overall pedigree. What do you feel your greatest professional accomplishment has been to date?
Definitely keeping DARE strong during a time of less funding for all non-profits and winning several fights. We've recently had two major victories. First, we were able to remove the question "have you ever been convicted of" on job applications. Called "Ban the Box," this gives many people a chance to get interviews. The second victory is known as "Just Cause." Just Cause ended the practice of automatic eviction of tenants after a foreclosure, making banks accept rent while they own the property.

The beauty of DARE is that we are a member led organization, so my role is to facilitate democratic processes for almost everything we do. Other directors make executive decisions and move forward quickly. Our processes take 20 times the time and energy but it is the reason why we remain strong. Our work is shared and owned by all our members.
My other biggest challenge is raising money for DARE. Even though organizing has been the approach that has moved every large movement in the US, like the Civil Rights movement, organizing is not valued by local funders. We challenge capitalism, trickle-down economics, and the ever widening wealth gap. This seems too radical to most who want to continue the same interventions that have not been working. So we do not get the mainstream funding that most non-profits in RI enjoy.
Tell us something no one knows about you?
A couple of things that most people don’t know about me are that I am a former Marine and, at one time, I was a poor Guatemalan child just like you see in the commercials.
Who is your role model?
Career-wise, the former executive directors of DARE. Wow, they made this job seem easy! In history or the world, I’m not sure. I’ve been walking my own path.
