Providence Will Not Install Parking Meters on Hope St., No Word on Other Neighborhoods

Just announced Friday morning, the City of Providence is scrapping plans to install parking meters on Hope Street. Providence City Council Majority Leader Kevin Jackson and State Representative Aaron Regunberg issued statements on Friday expressing their approval of the decision to not put parking meters on Hope Street.

“I am very pleased to hear that the administration has reversed their decision to install parking meters on Hope Street. The administration’s original parking meter expansion did not include Hope Street, and I shared the same concerns as my neighbors when I learned those plans had changed. Findings from the City’s recent parking study confirmed what we already knew about our community: Hope Village truly is a neighborhood, not a commercial district. The small family businesses on Hope Street enrich our community and add value and vitality to the City of Providence. Adding parking meters to the area would have deterred patrons from visiting our neighborhood shops and restaurants without generating the kind of revenue the administration hoped for. I’m glad our voices have been heard," said Kevin Jackson.

Regunberg added "Our merchants, residents, neighborhood organizations and elected officials have all spoken with a unified voice against installing parking meters on Hope Street, and I am very excited that the City has chosen to listen to our community. Hope Street is a gem that we should all be proud of, and I commend the City for recognizing that the costs to the businesses and the neighborhood outweigh the benefits of this proposal."

Regunberg concluded his statement by giving thanks to the Hope Street Merchants Association.

"Even more so, I am grateful for the energetic activism and hard work of the Hope Street Merchants Association and my many neighbors in standing up for our community - when we join together, we can do exciting things."
