Rep. Williams Fires Back at John Hope Settlement Critics

STATEMENT FROM REP. WILLIAMS ON JOHN HOPE SETTLEMENT HOUSE
State Representative Anastasia Williams, President of the John Hope Settlement House Board of Directors, issued the following statement in response to the call made by a group of dissidents seeking the resignation of her and the other board members:
GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLASTI have intentionally not responded right away to the unfounded and baseless allegations made against me and the other dedicated members of the John Hope Settlement House Board of Directors. I wanted some time to pass for this situation to calm down in order to respond in an appropriate manner.
I am issuing this personal response as a State Representative who has served the people of my district in Providence with honor and distinction. I have fought tirelessly to assist those in my impoverished district by focusing on affordable and fair housing, improving educational and job opportunities, and passing laws that address civil rights, justice and respect.
Like my service at the State House, my volunteer efforts with the John Hope Settlement House are solely aimed at improving the quality of life for the residents of Providence.
It is deeply disappointing and truly sad that Taino Palermo, the former executive director who served the agency for less than three months (May 27, 2014 to August 25, 2014), and other dissidents, have chosen to besmirch my reputation with these untruths. He violated his employment contract that clearly spelled out his duties and responsibilities. He also violated John Hope’s code of ethics and conduct policy, and its rules and regulations. Taino Palermo’s conduct was detrimental to the best interests of the John Hope Settlement House, its staff and all the people it serves.
The allegations may be politically motivated in an election year, considering the press conference called by this group was held one day before the Democratic Primary. I have never used my position on the board to benefit me politically in any way
Regarding the innuendoes and untruths that have been alleged by this group of dissidents, I unequivocally state that these are all false. The problems alleged at the John Hope Settlement House began long before I was a member of the board.
I have joined with other courageous and committed individuals in reviving, restoring and renewing John Hope’s mission. I call upon any and all who are willing to help to step up and move John Hope forward in a positive direction.
