RI’s Best Communities 2016: See Who is #1

It is rare that a global tourism destination is also a great place to live year-around and to raise children. But, Newport, RI is that very special place.

While thousands upon thousands invade the city in the summer, Newport is a community with its own little collection of distinct and beautiful -- and livable -- neighborhoods.  The Point has a different feel and vibe from Kay and Catherine, as do the Bellevue and the Fifth Ward areas, and so on and so on.

Environmental activist and State Representative Lauren Carson says what makes Newport different and great is “the tremendous sense of pride in the community.”  There are many communities in Rhode Island that love their towns, but nothing quite like Newport.

“Everyone who lives here is connected to the city in their own way. They have their favorite walk, restaurant, beach –  even their favorite place to watch the sunset. It’s a spiritual bond between residents and the surrounding environment,” said Evan Smith, the head of Discover Newport, the tourism non-profit that promotes Newport and a host of other East Bay communities.

Newport’s Momentum

“It seems like in the past five to seven years the sense of community spirit has exploded,” said Carson.

“Newporters of the past shaped what this city has become, the Newporters of today are blessed to be stewards of this very special place and along with the Newporters of tomorrow, we need to be passionate about caring for its future,” added Smith.

Eclectic

Newport is that distinct place that sometimes seems like a collection of things that are not like one another, but somehow have melded together beautifully. Sailors, college students, barkeepers, stone cutters, artists, polo players, technologists — all bundled together in some of the most beautiful homes — big and small — surrounded by the a fantastic coastline.

“I go out at night and feel safe - it's not New York City or Providence - its lovely,” said Carson. While Newport has a fraction of the population of Providence, it has nearly as many restaurants and bars and has twice as many museums and galleries as Providence.

For everything Newport is on a postcard or Instagram it is both economically and racially far more diverse than most realize. Newport’s schools need additional work, and the City often ranks as having some of the state’s poorest residents, but it has a connectivity that integrates most everyone together.

“Newport is the place where history, sport and culture all come to life. It’s also a work in progress. For more than 400 years, people have called the southernmost end of Aquidneck Island home,” said Smith.

Newport is ranked by GoLocalProv.com the Best Community in Rhode Island for 2016.
