RI DEM Closes Point Judith Pond Due to Potential High Bacteria Counts

RI DEM closes Point Judith Pond due to potential high bacteria counts.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has closed Point Judith Pond to shellfishing due to potential high bacteria counts.

According to DEM, the closure is due to Sunday’s storm which brought over 2.5 inches of rain to the area.

“Available data indicates that it is likely that bacteria levels in Point Judith water samples will exceed levels safe for shellfish consumption,” said RI DEM.

DEM is scheduled to collect water samples on Monday with results available late Wednesday.

The status of the pond will be updated once acceptable bacteria results are reached.
