RI PowerPlayer: Larry Lepore

Every week, GoLocalProv shines the spotlight on one individual who is making an impact on Rhode Island.  This week, GoLocalProv sat down with Larry Lepore, General Manager of the Dunkin' Donuts Center arena and the Rhode Island Convention Center.

RI Convention Center Authority merged with the Dunkin' Donuts Center ten years ago in an effort to refurbish the arena. As the Executive Director of the Center, you played a big role in its revival. Can you tell us a bit about the journey you’ve taken to create a venue for entertainment?

Due to the fact that the “Dunk” hadn’t been renovated in so many years, our efforts focused on improving the patron experience with widening the concourse, enhancing the concessions stands, adding additional restrooms, and replacing seats. Our efforts also included improvements to the ‘back of house’ for our primary tenants and all performers walking through the backstage door. These renovations included new locker rooms and dressing rooms, new video scoreboard, and energy efficiencies that reduce the cost of doing business.

What have been your biggest accomplishments with the Dunkin' Donuts Center as general manager and executive director?

The biggest accomplishments would have to be, in no particular order, acquiring Dunkin’ Donuts as the naming rights sponsor, overseeing the $80 million renovation project, securing the X Factor Auditions (national TV), and bringing back NCAA Basketball to Providence in 2016.

What is the most challenging aspect of running an arena like the Dunk?

Bookings continue to be the most challenging for the “Dunk.” We could be working on show and be just about ready to cross the finish line and one of the casinos will approach an artist’s agent and offer more “perks” and a bigger guarantee. Next thing you know, we’re out and they’re in.

After all of these years working with the Dunkin' Donuts Center and the Rhode Island Convention Center, what has been your favorite event at the Dunk?

You would think this question would be difficult to answer, but it’s not—U2 in 2001. After September 11th, U‐2 performed two nights on October 30 and 31. They revamped their performance during the song, “One” and scrolled the names of all the victims of September 11th. Bono had the American Flag stitched in his jacket. It was the performance of a lifetime. Later that night as Bono was leaving the arena, I witnessed his car stop, get out of the car, and he walked over to a group of policemen and fireman who were back there and shook their hands thanking them for their service.

This winter you have been leading negotiations with SMG to bring the “Ice Kingdom” ice sculpture garden to Providence. Can you tell us a bit about what a project like this would bring to the state?

Ice Kingdom is a 15,000 square foot winter wonderland. Giant ice sculptures of buildings, animals, people, and places are created by a team of international expert ice carvers. It takes 40 artists from Harbin, China 28 days to create. So far the attraction has appeared in Nashville, TN, Washington, DC, Dallas, TX, and Orlando FL, drawing crowds of up to 300,000 spectators in each city. The Ice Kingdom will bring a substantial economic impact to the City and State as a whole. We are very excited about the prospect of being one of the cities to host this amazing event.

Can you take us through a typical day as Larry Lepore?

I’m an early bird, which you wouldn’t think I am because of working so many late nights. I’m usually up and out by 7:30 a.m. When I arrive at the Complex, I begin with a walk through of both the “Dunk” and the Convention Center. Most times, a changeover from one event to another has occurred overnight so I make sure things are running smoothly operationally. The remainder of my day includes meetings, emails, and phone calls all on how to bring business to our City, State, and facilities.

What is your favorite thing about Providence?

My most favorite thing about Providence is I get to hear from visitors every day what a great city we live in!

What was the last movie you saw?

American Sniper.

Who are your role models?

I would have to say Dave Gavitt. In my eyes, the founder of modern day college basketball. He believed that college basketball could be played in large arenas and draw big crowds. The opportunity to work with him and learn from him back then is something that I will never forget.
