RI State Fire Marshal Says Matunuck Oyster Bar Fire Not Caused by Cooking Equipment

The Office of the State Fire Marshal continues to investigate the fire that occurred on Tuesday, May 20, at Matunuck Oyster Bar located at 629 Succotash Road in South Kingstown.

“Based on information collected to date by inspectors, several possible causes have been ruled out, including commercial cooking equipment being a direct cause of the fire,” said the Fire Marshall’s statement.

“Currently, no exact cause has been determined, however, preliminary indications suggest the fire was accidental. Steps have been taken to preserve the security and integrity of the fire scene so that investigators can continue to examine the scene safely. Extensive mitigation measures have also been taken to prevent any contamination to nearby inland waterways,” said the statement.

 

The Office of the State Fire Marshal would like to extend thanks to the federal, state, and local agencies that have and continue to assist with the incident including but not limited to the Union Fire District, Kingston Fire District, Richmond Carolina Fire District, Narragansett Fire Department, South Kingstown Police Department, RI Department of Environmental Management, RI Department of Health, and the United States Coast Guard.
