RI's Megan Drewniak Named 2016 Coast Guardsman of the Year

Lt. Cmdr. Megan Drewniak has been named 2016 Coast Guardsman of the Year by Military Times --  and will be honored in Washington D.C. at a Capitol Hill event on July 14.

Drewniak was born in Providence and grew up in Jamestown before attending the University of Rhode Island.

She created the Coast Guard Sector Miami's mentorship program and its women's leadership program, bringing in speakers to inspire her female shipmates, and also volunteers off-duty as a fitness instructor to help fellow Coast Guardsmen get in shape. 

From 2014-2016, Drewniak served as an investigations officer, looking marine and commercial vessel casualties, negligent mariner cases along with other issues. 

Coast Guardsman of the Year 

The Coast Guardsman of the year award comes as part of the Military Times  2016 Service Members of the Year (SMOY) awards. 

"SMOY is special because nominations from from their peers. The winners are recognized for their service in the military and also for going above and beyond for their community. There is no other award like this,"said Peter Lundquist, President and CEO of Sightline Media Group, parent company of the Military Times.
