SAT Scores: How Did Your High School Do?

The state Department of Education released a breakdown of the 2010 SAT scores for high schools across the state yesterday. The results show that the statewide mean dropped one point in reading and four points in writing, but bumped up one point in math. (See below chart for a breakdown of the scores by high school.)

The mean scores for seniors in public high schools were 485 in reading, 488 in math, and 478 in writing.

The number of students participating also increased, with 11.8 percent more black students and 5.6 percent of Hispanics in public high schools taking the test. The numbers of minority students taking the Advanced Placement exam also are on the upswing. In all, 5,718 students took the SAT and 2,726 took the AP.

“Success on the SAT and access to AP course work is critical to meeting our goals,” said education commissioner Deborah Gist. “We are pleased with the progress Providence has made in providing access, and we will continue to support these efforts to provide more access to challenging, college-level courses, particularly in districts serving traditionally underrepresented groups such as students of color and students in living in poverty.”
