Sen. Morgan's Bill Calls for Human Trafficking Assistance Signs to be Posted

Elaine Morgan
Senator Elaine Morgan has introduced a bill that would require contact information for the National Human Trafficking Resource Center be posted at truck stops and other “targeted establishments.”

“We have seen far too many cases of human trafficking in Rhode Island and the New England corridor. I am continuing in my efforts to provide resources for victims of human trafficking,” said Senator Morgan.

Morgan said that the bill would require that signage stating “if you or someone you know is being forced to engage in any activity and cannot leave- whether it is commercial sex, housework, farm work, or any other activity – call the National Human Trafficking Resources Center Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 to access help and services.”

The signs would be posted in transportation stations, rest areas and welcome centers. The targeted establishments could also include massage parlors, spas, strip clubs and other sexually-oriented businesses.

“I’m hopeful that providing this kind of resource will provide much-needed help to those who are being victimized,” Morgan said.

The legislation now is scheduled to be heard before the Senate Judiciary Committee at the rise of the Senate on Tuesday, March 7 in Room 313.
