Boston Resident Melendez Sentenced for Trafficking Heroin in Providence

Efrain Arroyo Melendez, also known as Frank Feliz Baez, from Allston section of Boston has been sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for trafficking heroin into Providence, announced United States Attorney Peter Neronha and Michael Ferguson, the special agent in charge of Drug Enforcement Administration's New England Field Division.

The sentencing took place on July 22 in front of U.S. District Court Judge Mary Lisi who also ordered Melendez to serve five years supervised release once his prison sentence is completed.

According to the court records, DEA agents, with assistance of the Rhode Island State Police, intercepted luggage at the Amtrak Station and found 2.3 kilograms of heroin inside of it.

DEA Agents and police took the woman carrying the luggage, Amalia Martin, into custody where they learned she was taking the package to Melendez. DEA agents arranged to deliver a package purporting to contain the heroin to Melendez and then arrested him after he took custody of the package.

Amalia Martin, who pleaded guilty on December 18 to one count of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with the intent to distribute heroin, and one count of possession and attempt to possess with the intent to distribute heroin is set to be sentenced on September 15.
