NEW: Trucking Association Calls For a Commission to Review Toll Plan

The Rhode Island Trucking Association (RITA) has called for RI Governor Gina Raimondo and General Assembly leaders to form a commission that would look into how tolls on trucks would impact the trucking industry and businesses in the state.

“This process is moving entirely too fast and there have been no discussions or analysis on the fiscal impact of the proposed toll plan to the trucking industry or the business community,” said Christopher Maxwell, president of the RITA. “Again, we want to be part of the solution, but there are simply too many unanswered questions at this point. We would support the formation of a commission to properly vet the impact of tolls on all Rhode Islanders and believe that it will produce a more collaborative and transparent process.”

Robert Pitcher, Vice President of the American Trucking Associations, will also appear before the House Finance Committee to testify against the proposed toll plan.

New Budget

The House had recently approved a $8.7 billion state budget that addressed many issues, but did not include a plan to toll large trucks to pay for highway and bridge repairs.

The bill will appear before the Senate on Tuesday and it still remains to be seen how, or if, trucking tolls will factor in.
