Millions of dollars in federal grants awarded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) to the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Hospital, and Brown University are being slashed by the Trump administration.
Beyond the adverse effect on research and science, the millions of dollars in loss revenue will soon have an impact on the Rhode Island job market.
GoLocal spoke to three scientists who do research, who said they are deeply worried about the impact of the cuts but refused to comment on the record for fear that federal grants that they are working on could be impacted.
Previous to the Trump cuts now hitting Rhode Island, the state was already seeing increases in the unemployment rate.
As GoLocal reported, Governor Dan McKee's administration announced last Thursday that the February unemployment rate in Rhode Island was 4.7%.
That number was up one-tenth of a percentage point from the January rate. Last year, the rate was 4.0% in February.
Rhode Island's unemployment rate is higher than the national average and increasing faster.
The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.1% in February, up one-tenth of a percentage point from January. The U.S. rate was 3.9% in February 2024.
In addition, GoLocal was first to report that separate and apart from these NIH grant cuts, Rhode Island has been slashed for $31 million in grants from the CDC. The number of layoffs from the CDC cuts is unknown at this time.
