About Incidents and Arrests
According to police, shortly before 10 PM on Sunday, August 11, officers tried to break up large crowds that were engaged in public drinking on Broad Street at Miller Avenue.
Police said that they asked a man who was drinking from an open liquor bottle, and in possession of a black satchel, to leave the area, at which time he attempted to evade police and discard the satchel.
Officers then went to detain the suspect — later identified as Adonis Placencia, age 27 — and upon searching the satchel found a gun.
According to police, Placencia resisted arrest as he was placed in police custody.
During the arrest, one officer struck the man. Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez subsequently defended the use of force.
At that time, police said a large crowd began to gather and throw drinks at them, hitting several officers.
Police then arrested and detained Edward Mclean, age 40, and Denzel Rodriguez, age 25; officers said they were also physically assaulted by Damian Reyes, age 19, who was also arrested and detained.
Melissa Reynoso, age 24, was also arrested and detained for reportedly pushing officers.
Police say contained in the satchel was a 9mm gun with a magazine containing live cartridges.
