VIDEO: Drone Captures Car Fire on Newport Bridge by Johnston Man on Jet Ski

A video of a car fire on the Newport Pell Bridge was captured by an unlikely photographer -- a Rhode Island resident, who happened to be riding on a jet ski on Monday when he saw the smoke coming from the bridge.

And not only was he on his jet ski, he was carrying a drone.

"I was actually just on my jet ski and happened to have my drone on me and saw the smoke. It's a great shot via drone," said Dan Walser of Johnston, in an interview with GoLocalProv.com about the video.

Walser is also a pilot, water-skier, and offroader. He owns Walser Mobile Refrigeration.

The footage from above shows the car on fire -- and public safety response to the incident.  The Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority took to Twitter Monday afternoon to keep drivers informed. (SEE BELOW).

"[I had] packed up the drone in a dry bag with some towels around it. Took it with me for the first time actually. Just wanted to get some scenery shots and follow me and a couple friends around on the ski," said Walser.

The video shows emergency response teams from both Newport and Jamestown.

It was when Walser saw the smoke that he decided to deploy the drone -- from the back of his jet ski.

"I was able to launch it from my ski and land it back into my hands," said Walser. "Wasn't the easiest task but worked and well worth the risk for the shot."

Walser noted he had the footage of the drone coming back to him on the jet ski as well -- but he clipped it.

"The number of U.S. commercial drones is expected to grow by a factor of 10 over the next half-decade, from 42,000 drones in 2016 to more than 420,000 by 2021, according to a report by the Federal Aviation Administration," reports Motley Fool.
