Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi on Monday announced the winning bid for the naming rights to the city’s $8 million outdoor ice skating rink that will be built behind City Hall.

“We went out to bid about three weeks ago with high hopes. We had a minimum bid of $250,000,” said Picozzi. “We had two bids returned — both companies that are very vested in the city of Warwick.”

“The top bidder at $300,000 was Greenwood Credit Union,” said Pizcozzi of the winning bid for naming rights for five years. “Greenwood Credit Union, throughout my time in Warwick, they've sponsored Little League teams, soccer teams — they’re always there for nonprofit organizations, it’s just a great marriage here.”

Picozzi said the motion to approve the naming rights now goes to the City Council for approval; the final design for the rink will also need to be approved as well.

The anticipated $8 million rink received $5 million in federal ARPA funds, and once built, Picozzi says based on a financial review of the ice skating rink in Providence, the rink should at minimum break even; he expects it will generate a profit.

“I think we’ll probably do better than Providence,” said Picozzi.

Warwick recently ranked better than Providence for “best-run cities” in America,.
