Westerly Yacht Club Will Now Allow Women Members, Reverses 88-Year Policy

Less than a month after voting to uphold the ban on women members, the Westerly Yacht Club voted Wednesday night to reverse course and allow women members for the first time in the club's near 90-year history.

The vote took place after a firestorm of criticism of the club, from female leaders in the state to the ACLU

"310 great men deserve all of the thanks for bringing the WYC into this century, while 82 remain in the dark ages," said Julie Lynn Cardinal, who has been a vocal proponent for women members. "All is well that ends well. Congratulations WYC and all the beautiful women of this community, and welcome to 2016! "

Reaction to First Vote

GoLocalProv reported the following in June, after the vote not to allow women members:

It's 2016 -- and women are still not allowed to become members of The Westerly Yacht Club.

The club, which was officially formed in 1928, allows women to take part in club activities and hold leadership positions, but voted again Thursday night to maintain the males-only membership status quo.

"I'm a daughter of a past commodore and BOD member, a grand daughter of a lifelong member, now divorced from someone who was a member, (became one because of my family), served on numerous committees during that time. My son has been a sea scout for years and a well respected and loved participant there. I was even employed there in the past as well.... and the list goes on," wrote Julie Lynn Cardinal on a public post. "And even I am given no consideration towards membership, because I'm a woman."
