Whitehouse’s Secret Dinner at Kushner & Trump's Home Raises Questions of Conflict with Investigation

(L to R) Whitehouse, Trump, Kushner
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse has been railing against the Trump administration for months on the lack of transparency and the role of President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. In repeated appearances on national political talk shows like Morning Joe and Meet the Press Daily, Whitehouse has raised repeated questions regarding Kushner’s role in the campaign and ties to Russian interference.

Fast forward to just a week ago Tuesday, Whitehouse -- a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee -- attended a secret private dinner at the home of Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump.  Axios broke the story.

Now, Whitehouse is the secret one. Despite Kushner being one of the key players tied to Russian interference in the election — now being investigated by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller and a host of Congressional committees, including Whitehouse’s Senate Judiciary Committee - Whitehouse socialized with the target.

As CNN reported in August:

The Senate Judiciary Committee is calling on the White House to provide new details about President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner's security clearance application, including whether he could be trusted with sensitive information after he initially failed to disclose meetings with Russian officials.

“The White House sought Senator Whitehouse’s input as a leading congressional negotiator on criminal justice reform. He was one of a number of Democratic and Republican senators in attendance. The Senator considers every invitation to hear from administration officials about opportunities for bipartisan progress on issues that matter to Rhode Islanders,” said Meaghan McCabe, Rhode Island Press Secretary for Whitehouse.

Whitehouse’s office refused to answer a range of other question and was unwilling to make the differentiation between a meeting with “The White House” and having dinner at Kushner and Trump’s home.

Whitehouse refused to answer:

  • The dinner was not a White House event. Why would the Senator attend a private dinner with someone who is material involved in an ongoing investigation?
  • Moreover, Senator Whitehouse has been aggressive at calling for disclosure of meeting by the President relating to having meetings at Mar-a-Lago, why did Senator refuse to disclose the dinner?
  • Senator Whitehouse was on "Morning Joe" in July and raised frustration about Kushner's role and the lack of transparency by the administration. This secret dinner is inconsistent with the Senator's claims and charges in the past -- does he regret attending?
