Candidates Qualify for 2010 Election

The Secretary of State yesterday released the names of those candidates who qualified for the ballot in either the September primary or the November election. Last Friday, candidates had to turn in the signatures necessary to qualify. They needed 500 for most statewide races to 1,000 for governor.

One notable surprise of the day was Republican Bob Tingle's failure to garner enough signatures to be on the ballot as a candidate for lieutenant governor. Tingle is a two-time Republican candidate against U.S. Senator Jack Reed. Tingle was only able to muster 371 signatures, short of the necessary 500. His primary opponent, Heidi Rogers, turned in 3,231 signatures.

After announcing the candidates who qualified, Mollis used a machine from the Rhode Island lottery to determine the order in which candidates and parties would be listed on this year’s ballots.

The Moderate Party, which was established this year, came out as the big winner, securing the first spot for its candidates on the November ballot. It will be followed by the Democrats, Republicans, and independents.

Among the candidates for governor, Chafee will be listed first, following by the three other independents (see below list), Moderate Party candidate Ken Block, Democrat Frank Caprio, and the Republican nominee—either John Robitaille or Victor Moffitt.

In the Democratic primary for the First District Congressional race, the endorsed candidate, David Cicilline, will automatically appear first, followed by Bill Lynch, Anthony Gemma, and David Segal. In the Democratic primary for Attorney General, the endorsed candidate, Peter Kilmartin, will be listed first, followed by Stephen Archambault and Joseph Fernandez.
