2018 Gov's Playbook: Closing Arguments

Tomorrow is election day and the end of the 2018 gubernatorial race is less than 48 hours away. Now, Governor Gina Raimondo, GOP candidate Allan Fung and independent Joe Trillo are making their last arguments as to why they deserve the support of undecided voters.

For Raimondo, who has been leading in recent polls — see Harvard’s John Della Volpe poll below which shows Raimondo with an 8-point lead over Fung — the goal has been to avoid mistakes and tie Fung to Trump. GoLocal unveiled that Raimondo’s Administration delayed the release of the new education test results until after the election.

Raimondo's campaign's final message is "she’s fixing our roads and bridges. She’s rebuilding our economy. And it’s working -- we now have the lowest unemployment in nearly 30 years, and last year we had the highest wage growth in the nation. But all that progress is at risk -- we all need to pitch in and protect it."

In contrast, Fung has been hitting Raimondo on two fronts: accusing her of collusion between her campaign and that of the independent candidate Trillo. Fung claims that Trillo is in the race in order to split the traditional conservative vote with himself. And, Fung has been attacking Raimondo on her administration’s management failures — management of DCYF, UHIP, etc.

"Gina Raimondo thinks so little of RI Republicans & supporters of the President that she thinks they're stupid enough to fall for her shenanigans," said Fung. "You don't have to be a Rhodes Scholar to figure out that Gina Raimondo & Joe Trillo have cut a deal to try and keep the insider deals & corruption as the ongoing status quo on Smith Hill for four more years. It's not going to work! Rhode Islanders are craving change, and that's what they're going to vote for next Tuesday" said Fung.

Trillo is making a flimsy claim that his “internal poll” is showing him ahead of Fung. All credible independent data shows Trillo in garnering support in the mid-teens or even lower. “I have said from the beginning that I am in this race to win for the people of Rhode Island.  With Fung essentially out of contention, if the voters of Rhode Island want an alternative to Gina Raimondo, I am that choice,” said Trillo.

Beyond the candidates is the final push by independent expenditure groups. One group has posted a video asserting that Trillo is being disloyal and the video dresses the former Republican as Shrek (See Below).

By about 9 p.m. on Tuesday night Rhode Islanders will know who will be the governor of the state for the next four years.
