Breaking News: Senator Reed Endorses Constantino for Mayor of Providence
In a late announcement, United States Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) announced his endorsement of House Finance Committee Chairman, Steven Constantino in his bid for Mayor of Providence. The surprise announcement comes just days before the primary. Sen. Reed hit on Costantino’s fiscals skills, his leadership in passing a historic school funding formula and his ingenuity in obtaining funds to close the gap in Medicare benefits that would have directly affected Rhode Island’s seniors.

“It is an honor and privilege to have earned an endorsement from Sen. Reed, a man for whom I hold such great admiration and respect,” said Costantino. “I have been so fortunate to work beside Sen. Reed on many issues affecting our state and our capital city and have witnessed his thoughtful and diligent manner first hand. Rhode Islanders are represented by a man with great integrity and determination in the U.S. Senate. His confidence in my leadership is valued and appreciated. I look forward to leading this city through these tough times and into a strong and prosperous future and I thank Senator Reed for his support in this effort.”

Taveras campaign manager Lauran Nocera issued the following response to the endorsement yesterday:
"A Democratic Senator endorsing a Party-endorsed candidate? That is how insider politics works. Over Costantino's many years at the State House it should come as no surprise to any of us that he has earned political favors. The only thing that really matters is the endorsement from Providence voters on Tuesday," Nocera said.
