Fecteau: Block Voting

Ken Block
Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Mr. Ken Block has embraced the issue of investigating voting irregularities, and potential fraud. This is a contentious issue because you can always find someone in Rhode Island who claims to know a victim of voter fraud; their husband’s best friend’s second uncle was a victim, or so they claim.

While widespread voter fraud has been widely disputed, that hasn’t stopped Mr. Block from making unsubstantiated accusations. He has disingenuously conflated voter fraud with the fact our voting systems are antiquated and in need of some serious upgrades -- agreed. Yet, this isn't evidence of pervasive voter fraud. This calls for an investment by federal, state, and local governments into updating our voting systems – something Republicans are traditionally hesitant to do.

As a graduate student at Harvard University, I offered to conduct an independent study of the issue of voter fraud in Rhode Island for Mr. Block. While I do not necessarily believe voter fraud is pervasive, I am willing to look into the issue and discuss the results with Mr. Block – the good, bad, and ugly. Unfortunately, Mr. Block told me via social media “The MIT Elections Data and Science [division] is recreating [his] work” and I am out of my league.

When contacted the head of the respective MIT division, he denied MIT Data and Science division is recreating or peer reviewing Mr. Block’s work or study. I told Mr. Block such via social media. After Mr. Block called me an “idiot” (he also hysterically opposes ad hominem attacks), he let me know I am simply talking to the wrong people (again, talked to the division head).

This also didn’t stop Ms. Tara Granahan from featuring him on her show after I explained this was not true. Considering I believe Mrs. Granahan is just a shock jock with low ratings; I wasn’t surprised. I find it exceptionally entertaining – if not hilarious – an individual so enthusiastic about voting irregularities, Mr. Block, has in fact, misrepresented the nature of a study has failed to meet his own standards of integrity.

I am willing to study this issue in-depth, which would be carefully vetted by members of the Harvard University staff. Unfortunately, Mr. Block has thus far refused – strange from someone so concerned about voting irregularities.

Let’s take a pause from the issue of voter fraud for a second. We should start to talk about the credibility of the people misrepresenting studies to justify their personal myopic conclusions, and reinforce prejudices. Let’s also talk about shock jocks that feature people that knowing misrepresent the nature of their studies, and question the integrity of our voting system. I am speaking of Mr. Block and Ms. Granahan respectively of course.

I would be more than willing to assist in any investigation and conduct a study into voter fraud and irregularities in Rhode Island; my offer still stands. Nevertheless, strangely, there is some ambivalence from Mr. Block, but after he misrepresented his relationship with a renowned university, I can see why; credibility counts at the polls and in life, and right now, Mr. Block’s credibility is seriously in question – maybe someone should let Ms. Granahan know?
