House Minority Caucus Rips Democratic Budget

House Minority Leader Rep. Brian Newberry
The House Minority Caucus are calling the budget released by House Democrats a stand still budget, that offers little tax relief to Rhode Island taxpayers, while continuing to spend wildly.

“The tax breaks we are seeing in the Democrat-issued budget are practically symbolic, designed to fool the public into thinking the state is cutting government spending, when in actuality, the tax breaks are so mild, it barely costs the state anything, while continuing to heavily tax Rhode Islanders” said House Minority Leader Brian C. Newberry.

Newberry continued "The budget can be a complicated formula for even the most advanced financial expert to digest, but the devil is in the details in this budget. The public should be aware that cutting beach fees in half, or enacting token tax breaks for retirees, does not mean the state has any skin in the game. In fact, the Democrats have kept most of the legislative grants within their control by burying them within their budget. Cutting these grants out completely would have saved the state millions, and is what House Republicans have been lobbying for, for years.”

According to the Tax Foundation's Facts & Figures publication, Rhode Island ranks 45th out of 50 nationally for its business tax climate, and 44th out of 50 for property taxes.

“These numbers are fact, and it does not take a financial analyst to interpret the data, which clearly demonstrates that the state of Rhode Island, under Democratic rule, for far too many years, has delivered budget after budget, which, with rare exception, has progressively pushed the state and its residents into nearly irreversible financial ruin. Rhode Island remains firm in its place as a national outlier for taxes," said Leader Newberry.

The House Minority Caucus consists of House Minority Leader Representative Brian C. Newberry (R-District 48 N. Smithfield, Burrillville) and members Rep. Michael W. Chippendale (R-District 40 Foster, Glocester, Coventry), Rep. Doreen Costa (R-District 31 N. Kingstown, Exeter), Rep. Blake A. Filippi (I-District 36 Charlestown, S.
