LIVE ELECTION UPDATE Cicilline Wins Hard Fought Race 10:50 PM

Democrat David Cicilline has won a hard-fought race with Republican John Loughlin for the First Congressional District seat being vacated by Patrick Kennedy. Cicilline was drawing 50.7 percent of the vote to 44.4 percent for Loughlin, with 95 percent of precincts reporting.

The win comes after polls showed the race tightening and in the run-up to today’s vote, pollsters told GoLocalProv the race could have gone either way, with Cicilline needing a strong Democratic turnout to pull ahead.

Cicilline’s campaign said it had achieved the high voter turnout needed to win the race. “We are seeing very strong turnout in the areas we are expecting David to perform strongly,” Cicilline spokesman Rich Luchette said earlier today. “Our amazing team of volunteers has been knocking doors in every corner of the district to get out the vote for David in the final two hours of this campaign.”
