NEW: Bill Introduced to Establish RI Inspector General Office

Dan Reilly
Rhode Island Representative Dan Reilly has introduced a bill aimed at detecting waste and mismanagement in state government. House Bill 5326 was introduced last week and establishes an Office of Inspector General.

The Bill calls for the Governor, Attorney General, and General Treasurer to jointly appoint the administrative head of the Office of Inspector General.

The term is limited to five years with a one term restriction.

Rep. Reilly on the Record

“The Inspector General’s sole function will be to save the state money, to save your hard-earned tax dollars. The state adds cost every year, but rarely monitors the effectiveness and management of spending. The Inspector General will work to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse within Rhode Island government," said Representative Reilly.

“This bill is all about transparency and better government, how many times have we seen a local news story on misappropriations of state funds and said to ourselves, ‘why isn’t anyone paying attention to my money?’ The Inspector General will pay attention and will stop wasteful misappropriation of funds," Reilly added.

The bill will provide office space and staff within the executive branch for the Inspector General.
