NEW: City Breaks Ground on Davey Lopes Pool Repairs

The City of Providence has broken ground on construction repairs at the Davey Lopes pool, after it had been closed -- amidst controversy -- since the beginning of last summer.

Providence City Councilman Davian Sanchez, who has been an outspoken advocate for reopening the pool in his district over the past year, said Friday, "I want to thank the Davey Lopes team -- Leah Willams Metts, and my colleagues who ensured we had the money to do this."

Sanchez said the bid that was awarded to the East Providence-based Alpha Omega industrial services company was "around $92,000."

"The contract says they need to be done by June 30," added Sanchez.

Meaghan McCabe, Deputy Press Secretary for Providence Mayor Angel Taveras said, "The contract was awarded to Alpha Omega, a state-certified women-owned business. Davey Lopes Pool will reopen on the same day that all pools open for the summer season in Providence."

Williams Metts, Omega on the Record

Community activist Leah Williams Metts said that she saw the construction Friday morning, and started "jumping up and down."

"I talked with the folks from Alpha Omega who were there working, and saw that the city sent two workers who were power washing the shallow end," said Williams Metts.

Williams Metts added, "People needed to see this happen.  I was going to go national with this, if work hadn't started by June 1."

Alpha Omega Vice President and Site Supervisor Stephanie Dorazio said Friday, "We'll be doing everything we can in order to have this done on time."

"We're a minority, female-owned business," said Dorazio, who added the shop was part of the Bricklayers' union.
