NEW: Elorza Calls for Cianci to Return City Worker Donations, But Takes Them Himself

Democratic candidate for Mayor of Providence Jorge Elorza has blasted Buddy Cianci for taking donations form city workers, but one of Elorza's biggest supporters has donated $1,000 and takes a City of Providence paycheck.

Elorza said, “Accepting contributions from city employees is a conflict of interest that fed a pay-to-play culture of corruption when Mr. Cianci was mayor. His decision to take money from city employees after recently telling the crowd at a public forum he had ‘not accepted a dime’ from city staff and pledging he would not is the clearest sign yet that the former mayor has not changed. With Vincent Cianci it is always important to pay attention to what he does, not what he says.”

Myrth York, the three-time failed Democratic candidate for Governor has donated two contributions to Elorza of $200 and $800 since September.  She is the paid Chair of the Providence Zoning Board.

York has been criticized for some of the zoning changes on Federal Hill.

Elorza is calling on Cianci to return around $18,000 in campaign contributions he has accepted from dozens of city employees.

"From the beginning of his campaign, Jorge Elorza has been a forceful advocate of uncompromising ethical standards for city employees. He is the first and only Providence mayoral candidate to make a comprehensive ethics pledge, and he will not accept contributions from city employees during his campaign," Elorza's camp said in a release.

“As mayor, I will bring honest leadership to the Mayor’s Office and take Providence in a new direction, not backward to the corruption that defines Mr. Cianci’s legacy,” Elorza said.
