NEW: McKee CIaims Taylor Splitting from Fung

Dan McKee
Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor Dan McKee has spoken out over opponent Republican Catherine Taylor's opposition to right to work law, given Republican Gubernatorial candidate Allan Fung's support of it.

McKee said he was "not surprised" that the AFL-CIO decided to oppose his candidacy, but was at Taylor's position.

“I am astounded that, less than 72 hours after she pledged to run as a cohesive ticket with Mayor Fung, who supports right to work, Ms. Taylor told AFL-CIO delegates that she opposes right to work in Rhode Island. I believe this calls into question the character of Ms. Taylor, who apparently has no compunction about throwing her running mate to the curb as she attempts to curry favor with organized labor," said McKee.

McKee said that he had "constructive relationships with municipal unions as he worked with them to successfully address the underfunding of the town’s pension and retiree health benefits programs" while Mayor of Cumberland. McKee has also stated he opposes making Rhode Island a right to work state.

"I will not state one position in public and another position in a back room to make a deal. I will not change my promises to Rhode Islanders. We desperately need to change course on education, we must improve infrastructure to attract and create jobs, we must lower taxes," said McKee.  "The Republican ticket is already at odds, and this campaign has just begun. I look forward to working with all Democrats in opposing the right to work, promoting safe work places for all employees and the right for a fair wage.”

McKee pointed to an article on Taylor's website highlighting statewide candidates Gina Raimondo and Nellie Gorbea along with Taylor (see below).  "Just who his Taylor supporting in the Governor's race?" asked McKee

Taylor Welcomes AFL-CIO Consideration

Taylor issued a statement Monday on her "appreciation for the AFL-CIO’s willingness to consider taking the unexpected step of endorsing a Republican.

“I look forward to meeting with leaders of the AFL-CIO’s member unions to discuss their support for my candidacy,” Taylor said. “I’m gratified that the executive committee recognized my call for the elevation of status and pay for direct care workers and my reputation for proactive collaboration with union representation as director of the Division of Elderly Affairs.

Taylor helped spearhead as head of RI DEA the Rhode Island State Plan on Alzheimer’s, which recommends a pay increase for direct care workers with frail elders, adults with disabilities, and children with special health care needs.

“I anticipate being able to work together with the labor movement to solve Rhode Island’s problems,” Taylor continued. “I firmly believe that every individual and organization has a role to play in our economic recovery. I’m excited to share my vision with Rhode Island over these next seven weeks, and the ensuing four years.”
