Rhode Island State Representative Jan Malik, who was defeated by Progressive challenger Jason Knight in September's Democratic primary, has announced he is waging a write-in campaign.

Malik, who was first elected to the district that represents parts of Barrington and Warren in 1996, lost to Knight with 637 votes to Knight's 867.

Libertarian Daryl Gould is currently on the ballot against Knight in November.

Malik's Statement

Malike made the announcement on Facebook on Monday:

Columbus Day seems to be an appropriate one to announce that I, Jan Malik, am back in the much talked about race. Just as Columbus set sail and had to navigate through many unseen obstacles, I too am up for the challenge that lies ahead in the upcoming weeks. Due to an outpouring of support from Barrington and Warren voters after the primary results, I did a lot of soul searching.

There is still a vast number of you who genuinely appreciate the time, effort, and positive results I achieved as State Representative for District 67. They continue to believe that our district needs someone who has a proven track record in getting what is currently needed done. I am hopeful that all of you who have shown such loyal support will ask others to join our voyage in getting me back to representing you again!! What you have to do on November 8 is: "Fill in the oval and Print "JAN MALIK" clearly in the box."
