NEW: RI State Lodge of Fraternal Order of Police Endorses Doherty

The Rhode Island State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police (RIFOP) is endorsing Brendan Doherty for Congress in the First Congressional District.  The decision came during the FOP’s 31st Biennial Conference on October 25-26 in Providence.   “I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Rhode Island Lodge,” said Doherty. “This organization represents the brave men and women who work hard to keep our state safe, and I’m privileged to have their support, especially in view of the dedicated service they are performing this week in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.”

The RIFOP also endorsed Mike Riley, Republican candidate for Congress in the Second Congressional District, and Sheldon Whitehouse, incumbent US Senator facing a challenge from Republican Barry Hinckley.

Doherty served as the Commissioner of Public Safety for the State of Rhode Island and Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police from April 2007 to April 2011. Prior to returning as Superintendent, Colonel Doherty had spent twenty-four years with the State Police, retiring in 2004 as the Executive Officer and second in command.
