NEW: Sec. of State's Office Releases Video for Black History Month

The Rhode Island Secretary of State's Office has released a video commemorating and honoring Black History Month.

In addition to Black History Month, the video commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, signed by President Johnson in 1964. Featuring testimony from former Deputy Secretary of State and Civil Rights activist Ray Rickman, the three-minute video pays tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Rickman, and all the others who struggled and bled to ensure the passage of Civil Rights legislation.

Rickman speaks briefly on his own career in the struggle for racial justice, recalling being beaten by Deputy Sheriffs in Sunflower County, Mississippi while campaigning for equality. He notes that he still carries the scars with him to this day, just above his hairline. But Rickman, who also served as President of the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society, was able to reflect on the incident with panache. "I worry about it, going bald," says Rickman, with a twinkle in his eye.

"We are a forgetful nation," Rickman concludes, returning to seriousness. The video concludes by urging us to remember the sacrifices that were made -- and remember the way in which those sacrifices safeguard the freedoms not just of one group, but of all Rhode Islanders.
