NEW: Taveras First to Sign Pledge to End 3rd Party Spending

Gubernatorial candidate and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras released a statement today regarding his willingness to become the first candidate to agree to the People's Pledge, an agreement to end third party spending in campaigns.

Taveras' Statement:

Earlier this week John Marion, executive director of Common Cause Rhode Island, called on gubernatorial candidates to sign the People’s Pledge to stop outside spending in the upcoming race for governor.

Mr. Marion is right. As candidates we must make sure that this race is controlled by Rhode Islanders, not by national special interest groups. The only way to ensure that is if we all agree to the People’s Pledge.

The People’s Pledge – as recently signed by Elizabeth Warren and Scott Brown in their 2012 US Senate race – underscores Democratic party values at their core – calling for an end to outside third party spending in campaigns.

So far I am the only candidate to agree to this pledge, but I am hopeful that the Treasurer and any future candidates to be the Democratic nominee for Governor will join me. As the Treasurer knows, the pledge will only be binding if everyone in the primary agrees to it, so there is nothing for the Treasurer to lose agreeing to it now.  Candidates can always come up with reasons to avoid signing the pledge, but Rhode Islanders deserve better.

I have already released my proposed version of the pledge but I am open to modifications proposed by Common Cause or the Treasurer. This election should be decided based on our vision for Rhode Island’s future, not based on who the special interests support.
