Pell Announces Safe Communities Plan for RI

Clay Pell
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Clay Pell unveiled his plan to make Rhode Island’s communities safer, including proposals for gun violence prevention and more collaboration between the Office of Governor and law enforcement in regards to public safety.

"Seizing the Future: Ensuring Safe Communities" also focuses on sentence reforms and penalties for minor crimes.

“As a prosecutor in the Coast Guard, I saw firsthand the toll that crime and violence can take on people’s lives. Without safety and security, it is impossible to build a robust economy where businesses can flourish and individuals can pursue their dreams. Just as there can be no excuse for a criminal act, there can be no excuse for failing to do all we can to prevent that act from occurring,” said Pell.

The plan includes proposals for reducing recidivism and providing reentry services, domestic violence prevention, protocols to address sexual assault on college campuses, and programs to help elderly Rhode Islanders that are victims of abuse.

Pell is running against Rhode Island general treasurer Gina Raimondo and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras for the Democratic nomination for Governor.  Pell's "Seizing the Future" plan is the 7th "issues" agenda he has released in his campaign.
