Raimondo Announces Protections for Working Families as Part of 2nd Term Goals

Raimondo announces second term goals
Governor Gina Raimondo announced Protections for Working Families as part of her second-term goals.

The protections include a modern equal pay law, expanded access to paid family leave, reforms to predatory payday lending, cracking down on wage theft and expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit.

“Rhode Island’s working families are the lifeblood of our state. Hardworking Rhode Islanders should get the pay they deserve and the workplace flexibility they need to care for themselves and their families. We must also ensure strict protections from unethical employers and lenders who can take advantage of Rhode Island’s most vulnerable,” said Raimondo.

Raimondo is running for reelection, but is being challenged by Matt Brown on the Democratic side and Cranston Mayor Allen Fung and others on the Republican side.

Raimondo's Second Term

According to Raimondo’s press release, in her second term, the Governor will break down more barriers that keep Rhode Island families from getting ahead.

Governor Raimondo will bring Rhode Island’s equal pay law into the 21st century. Women in Rhode Island are currently paid 86 cents for every dollar paid to a man doing comparable work, and the imbalance is far worse for women of color. The Governor will put Rhode Island on a path towards pay equity by banning employers from requesting applicants’ salary history, prohibiting workplace policies requiring “pay secrecy” and clarifying the definition of pay to include “comparable work,” instead of the outdated standard of “equal work” currently on the books in Rhode Island.

The press release adds, in her second term, the Governor will expand access to paid family leave so more Rhode Islanders can benefit. She will increase the number of weeks a worker can use per year and improve the benefits to better support all Rhode Islanders, including low-wage workers.

Every dollar Rhode Islanders earn should go into their own pockets, so Governor Raimondo will crack down wage theft by employers who try to skirt the rules and violate wage and hour laws. And no Rhode Islander in need should be offered a loan they can’t pay back, so she’ll reform our payday lending system and bring down the state’s usury caps and APR limits on these small loans.
