Rhode Island College Foundation Seeks to Return Fox Donation

Rhode Island College Foundation administrators are working with legal counsel to determine the process for returning a donation made by former Speaker of the House Gordon Fox last year, according to a statement from Rhode Island College Director of College Communications and Marketing Laura Hart to GoLocalProv.

“When Fox, a RIC alumnus, was in the process of closing his R.I. House Leadership PAC account in May 2014, he chose to make the RIC Foundation the designee of a $55,285.42 donation from that account,” said Hart.  “Subsequently, the donation was made in accordance with (Rhode Island Law).”

“Rather than immediately apply those funds toward a particular project or projects on campus, however, the RIC Foundation chose to hold the donation in a separate account pending clarification of the circumstances that led to the former Speaker's resignation.”

As GoLocalProv first reported, Rhode Island College also sought to revoke Fox's honorary Doctor of Laws degree upon his admission of wrongdoing.

Earlier this month Fox pled guilty to three felonies: bribery, wire fraud, and filing false tax returns nearly a year after raids on his home and office. His plea deal will have him serve 3 years in federal prison. His sentencing is set for June 11.
