RI Political Diary: Morgenthau Announces Run for Congress in RI

RI's Political Diary, exclusively from GoLocal, gives you up-to-date insights into the 2022 election.

Never heard of Sarah Morgenthau? Well, she does not have the deepest Rhode Island roots, but that has not stopped her in a run for the second congressional seat.

She posted a video on Thursday announcing her bid to succeed Jim Langevin.

According to her resume, she has not lived or worked in Rhode Island in the last 30 years.

She once ran her mother's failed congressional campaign. Her mother, Ruth Morgenthau, ran for Congress in Rhode Island in 1988 and was trounced by Claudine Schneider (R). The elder Morgenthau was far better known as an advisor to President Jimmy Carter and as a professor at Brandeis. She died in 2006 at the age of 75.

Now, it is Sarah --  the daughter who most recently has served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Travel & Tourism at U.S. Commerce in the Biden administration serving under Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo -- who is entering the Rhode Island political fray.

Morgenthau joins a crowded Democratic primary field that includes former Raimondo staffer Joy Fox, former State Rep Ed Pacheco, and General Treasurer -- and former gubernatorial candidate -- Seth Magaziner.
