Side of the Rhode: Who's Hot and Who's Not in RI Politics?

Side of the Rhode: Who's Hot and Who's Not in RI Politics?

Who’s Hot

Ed Cooley -> Reviving PC basketball is an unenviable task. But St. John’s proved a small school can win in the Big East this year and PC fans should have high expectations for Cooley. The key will be convincing the kids UConn and Syracuse and Pitt don’t want that the Big East is still the best conference in America, something that shouldn’t be all that difficult.

Veterans -> Why is it that as soon as we face fiscal problems we immediately attack the veterans and the teachers? Are there two more valuable groups of people in our country right now?

Newport Democratic City Committee -> Kudos to this group for announcing its support for same-sex marriage in Rhode Island. It should make a huge statement to arguably the most important person in the state when it comes to this debate: Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed.

Chris Blazejewski -> If there is any bill that should gain bipartisan support this session, how about a bill that makes college more affordable to Rhode Islanders? An absolute no-brainer. Kudos to this freshman rep for looking at the big picture.

Ken McKay -> Congrats to the new chair of the GOP in Rhode Island. Like Ed Cooley, he’s got an unenviable task, but if anyone can resurrect the Republicans in this state, it’s McKay. The question is, can he clear the field for the right candidates for the right offices early so he doesn’t have a series of difficult primaries on his hands?

Patrick Sweeney -> Made the right move by stepping aside for Ken McKay to take over as GOP chair. Now he needs to keep those young Republicans engaged if the GOP really wants to make a comeback in Rhode Island.

Narragansett Bay - > On a much a lighter note, kudos to Narragansett Bay for being honored as one of America’s Great Waters. It’s not really known outside of the state, but everyone here knows the Bay is the best place to hang out in the summer.

Who’s Not

Elected Officials -> The biggest question following Brown’s latest poll: Did you ever think a day would come when toll booths on I-95 would be more popular than a Congressman, the House Speaker and the Senate President?

Lincoln Chafee -> Another rough week for the Governor. The veterans are angry and the Brown poll suggested most other voters are angry as well. His one consolation: People actually seem to be OK with paying 6 percent more on dry cleaning.

Providence City Council -> Also less popular than toll booths on I-95. 80 percent of voters blame the council for the situation Providence is currently facing. Give credit to the new faces in the group who appear ready and willing to help solve this crisis.

North Providence -> Makes Providence look like Pleasantville at this point.

Census Results -> Here’s a sign soon to appear at both the Connecticut and Massachusetts’ borders: Welcome to Rhode Island: At least we’re not Michigan.

Sarah Palin -> The former Alaskan Governor is only slightly more popular than toll booths in Rhode Island. Sadly, even she could pummel David Cicilline if an election were to take place today.

John Ghiorse -> We love you, John. We really do. But snow flurries after the beautiful spring-like days we had last week make you not-hot this week. Can you please make some phone calls and get us some nicer days?
