Side of the Rhode: Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in RI Politics?

Every Friday, GoLocalProv breaks down who's rising and who's falling in the world of Rhode Island politics. This week we welcome Russ Moore who follows previous columnists Dan Lawlor, Dan McGowan, and Matt Jerzyk. Check out who made the lists this week.

Jeffrey Osborne with GoLocal's Avery Stone
HOT

Jeffrey Osborne: The R&B singer’s heart is even bigger than his voice. The annual Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Softball Classic on August 10th, held at iconic McCoy Stadium, which boasted of A-list celebrities like Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, raised more than $50,000 for local non-profits and charities. It’s nice to see celebrities in the news for good reasons.

Clay Pell: Love him or hate him, there’s no denying that his campaign is rallying. Once considered an afterthought or a potential spoiler to Providence Mayor Angel Taveras’ Gubernatorial hopes, he’s been generating all the buzz as of late. It remains to be seen whether he can maintain his recent momentum since Taveras has launched effective attack ads against him.

Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian
Scott Avedisian: It looks like The Teflon Don of Warwick will prevail again, despite a spirited, albeit unfunded challenge by his Republican opponent, Stacia Petri. Petri has criticized his annual tax increases, but any candidate without money is like a tree falling in the woods that no one hears (in other words, soundless).

RI Chapter of the ALS Association: GoLocalProv.com reported that the organization’s fundraising has increased by 20-percent from July 29 through August 12, when compared to the same period last year, due to the "Ice Bucket Challenge." Rhode Islanders are charitable people.

Central Falls: The charming little city continues its comeback under Mayor James Diossa’s leadership. This week is Central Falls restaurant week, which showcases the city’s remarkable amount of good eateries in 1 square mile. So I’ll be at Stanley’s for lunch today if anyone wants to join me (or, more likely, if anyone is looking for me).

Sandra Cano: The Pawtucket School Committee member and At-Large City Council candidate continues to rack up endorsements, lay out policy proposals, and take on the good ole boy’s network in Pawtucket. It’s nice to see new, energetic, and competent candidates like Cano coming forward.

NOT

Allan Fung: Look, Allan Fung is not a bad guy, but his campaign advertisements have been downright laughable. First, he insulted his opponent’s supporters by calling them “Blockheads”, than golocalprov.com broke the news that his “RI Open For Business” ad was shot in…Ohio. These colossal blunders call into question his signature selling point—management expertise.

2,100: According to crime statistics, Mansfield’s XFinity Concert Center, which has boasted of so many legendry acts over the years, has had more than 2,100 arrests over the last 2.5 years. Those numbers give the distinction of being one of the most dangerous places in New England.

Federal Hill
Gianfranco Marrocco: Speaking of dangerous places, the restaurateur and $3 dollar bar owner has, thankfully, managed to keep his mouth shut for the past week or so. But that doesn’t make him much less “not hot”, after recently calling his fellow Federal Hill business owners “racists” while simultaneously telling Angel Taveas to go back to the Dominican Republic the week prior.
$300,000: Dan McGowan over at wpri.com reports that the Providence Mayoral Candidates have spent a combined $333,279 over the past six weeks in their bids to capture the city’s top job. Unfortunately, it takes big bucks to run for Mayor of a major city, and that rules out scores of potential great candidates.

Mental illness: What a sad, tragic ending to the life of Robin Williams, a man who made so many of his fans, like myself, laugh with his superb acting and sense of comedy over several decades. The sooner we start taking mental illness more seriously, the better off we’re all going to be.

Toxic Debt
Tobacco Settlement Bonds: Kate Nagle, GoLocalProv.com’s ace, reports that the state of Rhode Island has not only squandered the state’s Tobacco Settlement money by not spending it on anti-smoking efforts, but that the money has turned into toxic debt. It’s just one more example of how badly Little Rhody voters need to start demanding leadership, not sound bites from our politicians.
