VIDEO: Morgan Announces Block Will Conduct TDI Waste & Fraud Study if Elected

Patricia Morgan
Rhode Island Republican gubernatorial candidate Patricia Morgan announced Tuesday that former gubernatorial candidate Ken Block has agreed to conduct a pro-bono study of the states Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) program for fraud and abuse, if Morgan is elected.

Morgan made the announcement at campaign headquarters in Warwick.

“Our government is broken. I have watched the state budget grow by $300 million every year. That money comes from hardworking Rhode Islanders and we are reaching a breaking point," said Morgan. "We must make government transparent and accountable for the hard-earned tax dollars it takes. We must ensure that we get the maximum value from each dollar."

“Today I am happy to announce that Ken Block, a fellow champion of accountable government, has offered to perform a waste and fraud investigation of our Temporary Disability Insurance program free of charge when I am Governor.  I readily accept the offer," said Morgan.

“TDI is a program that each worker pays for from their own earnings.  The state does not fund it.  Workers are required to pay 1.1% of their earnings.  Someone who earns $50,000 a year pays $550 into TDI. Anyone making more than $69,000 pays the maximum of $762 a year. That’s a hefty amount to take from hardworking Rhode Islanders, especially when it is compared to New Jersey. In that state the benefits are similar, but the premium is nearly half as much.  We want to find out why," added Morgan.

Promise of Study -- But Not Endorsement

Morgan said that the Block announcement does not constitute an endorsement of her campaign, nor will he make one moving forward, citing the need to take any "politics" out of his findings.

“I have made this offer to Governor Raimondo and Governor Chafee as well, however, neither of them accepted it. It is critical to ensure that taxpayer dollars are being spent for their intended purpose. I applaud Patricia Morgan who has not only pledged to protect taxpayer dollars but will actually take the necessary steps to do so. I am confident that Patricia will take those steps and look forward to serving the people of Rhode Island by finally being able to do this analysis,” said Block.
