Sports-Related Injuries To Send 13,000 R.I. Athletes To ER

Ice hockey, football and soccer injuries all cost more than $4,000.
According to a study conducted by Sun Life Financial’s business unit, sports-related injuries are forcing the parents of wounded Rhode Island athletes to pay thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket health costs.

Roughly 13,000 Rhode Island athletes will be sent to the emergency room this year and, depending on the sport, the average price of a visit will range between $3,000 and $7,000.

“Medical treatment can easily run into the thousands of dollars, meaning a family with high-deductible health insurance could be out $4,000 or more in aggregate deductibles before their insurance kicks in, and single high-deductible coverage averages approximately $2,000,” said Tyler Thims, the voluntary benefit practice leader for Sun Life’s New England region, referring to average high-deductible figures from the Kaiser Family study.

In response to the rising costs, Sun Life is now offering two accident insurance plans to supplement existing coverages.
