9 RI Golfers Competing in 2014 Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett

Providence native and reigning Rhode Island Interscholastic League Golf State Champion Will Dickson is one of 9 golfers with Rhode Island ties competing in the esteemed Northeast Amateur Tournament at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford.

Brad Valois of Warwick, Bobby Leopold of Cranston, Charlie Blanchard of North Providence, Jamison Randall of Cumberland, Daniel Blessing of Smithfield, and John Hayes IV of Newport make up the rest of the Rhode Island natives in the field.

Brown’s Nelson Hargrove and URI’s Joe Leavitt aren’t native Rhode Islanders but have ties to the state through college golf.

The Northeast Amateur is one of the most prestigious amateur tournaments on the planet.  Past winners include Ben Crenshaw, Dustin Johnson, local star Brett Quigley, and a host of other eventual PGA Tour players.

Wannamoisett CC is a consensus Top 100 course in the United States, offering a difficult Par 69 track deserving of the top amateur players of the world.

88 total players were invited to the tournament, which draws from all over the United States and even internationally.  For more than 10% of the field to have Rhode Island ties speaks to the talent pool the nation’s smallest state has to offer.

Round 1 action starts at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, and the tournament runs through Saturday’s 4th and final round.  Live scoring updates are available at this link.
